Ukraine Intensifies Drone Strikes on Crimea Amid Fuel and Power Crises

On June 23, 2026, Ukraine ramped up its drone strikes on Crimea, resulting in significant fuel shortages and power outages. The commander of Ukraine’s drone forces labeled the ongoing actions as a potential ‘psychological breaking point’ for Moscow.

Ukraine’s strategy focuses on isolating Crimea. Weeks of strikes on a crucial highway connecting the mainland to the peninsula have led to a severe fuel crisis. Long queues for gas culminated in a stop to civilian fuel sales by Sunday.

Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, stated the goal is the ‘total resource and logistical exhaustion’ of Crimea. He highlighted attacks on transport, energy, and tourism sectors, declaring that things would ‘never be the same again.’ Footage shared by Brovdi showed an oil depot ablaze in Kerch.

Putin’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 marked a symbolic political victory. However, ongoing Ukrainian advancements in drone technology have exposed Crimea’s vulnerabilities due to its proximity to Ukraine. The region has been under a fuel crisis since mid-May after intensified attacks on a key highway.

Amid ongoing shortages, Crimea’s leader, Sergey Aksyonov, announced gas is reserved for essential services. Four deaths and 28 injuries resulted from recent drone strikes in Kerch. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the targeting of an oil depot and military zones.

Power outages have compounded the crisis. Authorities attribute these to technological disruptions, without direct blame on drone activity. Sevastopol’s governor, Mikhail Razvozhaev, warned of reduced street lighting and canceled events to conserve energy.

Tourism in Crimea faces disruption as gas shortages and power outages take their toll. Summer camps stop accepting children. The drone commander, Brovdi, expressed regret for the anxiety caused to Ukrainians and urged caution near military installations.

Brovdi declared, ‘Crimea will topple Moscow,’ signaling a belief that Ukrainian actions could pressure Russia. However, Michael Clarke, military expert at King’s College London, views Kyiv’s aims as keeping strategic pressure rather than retaking Crimea.

Moscow deals with growing dissent and war fatigue. The Kremlin attempts to mitigate the crisis, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov promising efforts to secure fuel supplies. Despite the situation, Putin has not addressed the crisis publicly, pointing to Ukraine’s use of drone infrastructure strikes.

Russian military bloggers criticize Kremlin responses, lamenting Crimea’s isolation. Meanwhile, the battlefield in Ukraine remains static, and global peace efforts are at a standstill. At a recent summit, Trump indicated a renewed focus on Ukraine.

Control over Crimea could offer Kyiv a bargaining edge in future negotiations. If there’s no ceasefire, escalating distress in Crimea could increase pressure on Putin, challenging Russia’s symbolic control over the region.
