Taliban delegation receives visas for EU talks
Taliban officials have been granted visas by Belgium’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to head to Brussels for discussions with European Union officials. The meeting aims to address the deportation of Afghans from various European countries.
Coordination by European Commission
The European Commission, acting as the executive arm of the EU, has coordinated the talks. Several nations, including Sweden, have called for this meeting. The gathering is seen as a sensitive diplomatic endeavor, with both logistical and political implications.
Details of visa issuance
Belgian foreign ministry spokesman Laurens Soenen has confirmed the issuance of five visas for the Taliban delegation, granted late on Monday afternoon. These visas are valid for a single day in Belgium. Security and public order reasons prevent further confirmation of the delegation’s arrival date.
Purpose of the meeting
An Afghan government official revealed that the five-member delegation will travel to Brussels on Tuesday for a day-long visit. Their discussions will focus on consular services for Afghan citizens living in the EU, including their return to Afghanistan. The official provided this information anonymously.
A diplomat stationed in Kabul, although not part of the Taliban government, has verified the planned visit for Tuesday.
European Commission’s stance
The European Commission maintains a position of discretion regarding the timing of the meeting. Officials refer to it as a “technical” gathering, requested by EU member states.
