The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a satellite image showing Super Typhoon Bavi east of Guam on July 3, 2026. Residents of Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands are preparing for what is expected to be severe weather due to the typhoon’s approach.

Authorities predict that Bavi will pass through the region on Monday morning, potentially causing significant damage. Isla Public Media has warned about possible catastrophic impacts in the Pacific territories.

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued typhoon warnings for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. According to Landon Aydlett, a local NWS meteorologist, conditions have worsened, with heavy rain and strong winds impacting the islands.

This is a powerhouse super typhoon and this is going to be a very grim outlook for any island that takes a direct hit and that still looks like it could be the island of Rota.

Aydlett, who had been monitoring the super typhoon extensively, explained the seriousness of the situation. Rota, located northeast of Guam, faces potentially catastrophic conditions.

As of Sunday, the typhoon’s maximum sustained winds reached 165 mph, with forecasts suggesting it may intensify to 180 mph when passing over the islands. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center classifies storms with sustained winds of 150 mph or more in the western north Pacific as super typhoons. Residents are warned to expect damage, fallen trees, and power outages.

Guam’s Governor, Lou Leon Guerrero, declared a state of emergency readiness, urging residents to stay safe and avoid traveling or entering the water.

Emergency shelters are open and nearing capacity, especially as individuals living in low-lying areas or wood and tin homes seek refuge. The situation is particularly concerning for those still recovering from Typhoon Sinlaku, which hit in April. Northern Guam communities are vulnerable, and shelters on Saipan and Tinian are already full.

Guam is already experiencing power outages, flight cancellations, and the suspension of port operations. Flash flood warnings are in effect for Rota, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam, particularly in Dededo, the most populous village.

Officials have been alerting locals for several days about the impending storm. With the severity of Bavi, residents are advised to remain indoors and safe. Andersen Air Force Base on Guam is restricting access to essential personnel only.
