AUSTIN, Texas — Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff, has announced a five-point plan to clean up ethics in government. During an interview with Fox News Digital after attending the 2026 Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel emphasized the need for politicians to prioritize serving the public. Emanuel, contemplating a potential 2028 presidential run, outlined his proposal which includes:
- Banning stock trading for all government branches.
- Prohibiting participation in prediction markets.
- Mandatory retirement for officials at the age of 75.
- Implementing mandatory blind trusts for those with a net worth exceeding one million dollars.
- Tightening legal regulations on foreign gifts and investments.
Emanuel stated, “Every one of those applies” to government branches. He also discussed education systems, expressing dissatisfaction with both political parties. Emanuel highlighted shortcomings, saying Republicans have distanced themselves from public education while Democrats have abandoned accountability and standards.
Reflecting on Democratic Party mistakes, Emanuel admitted, “In 2012, we walked away from core curriculum and accountability,” resulting in negative impacts on education quality. He defended teachers, noting that while “teaching to the tests” was criticized, abandoning testing wasn’t the solution.
Emanuel criticized Republicans’ focus on alternative funding mechanisms, suggesting it masks opposition to teachers’ unions. He stressed a results-oriented approach. Emanuel suggested examining states like Mississippi and Louisiana, which have achieved educational success despite political affiliations. With concerns over literacy and math performance, Emanuel urged adjustments to improve educational outcomes.
Describing the current situation, Emanuel said, “We are not in a position when 50% of our kids cannot read at grade level, our math scores are worse.” Science education has performed better, but Emanuel believes educational systems need enhancements to compete globally.
Although Emanuel faces challenges in pursuing the Democratic nomination, RealClearPolitics polling averages show him outside the top 10 contenders. Vice President Kamala Harris currently leads with approximately 25% support from Democratic voters.
