The New York Post reported Duwaji was seen at Newark International Airport before boarding a flight to Palma, heading to a retreat organized by The Women Sanctuary. Councilwoman Joann Ariola, representing Queens, expressed disappointment, stating, ‘Nothing says America 250 quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation.’

Similar sentiments were echoed by Councilman Frank Morano of Staten Island. He noted it’s not about restricting vacation plans but recognizing the importance of the milestone. ‘The First Lady chose to be overseas instead of participating in one of the biggest civic events our city and country will mark this year,’ Morano shared with The Post.

Republican council members criticized Duwaji’s absence, viewing it as a missed opportunity for the city to show unity. Fox News Digital approached the mayor’s office for remarks, but no immediate response was received.

The retreat attended by Duwaji included workshops focused on plants mentioned in the Quran. Olives, pomegranates, dates, and figs were central to the spiritual reflection activities.

Meanwhile, Mayor Mamdani stayed in New York, addressing a heat wave and managing America 250 events. His administration announced expanded cooling centers and extended pool hours.

Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler criticized the trip’s timing, referencing Mamdani’s prior advice to New Yorkers regarding air conditioning use.
