In a display of support for their late colleague, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Republican senators have endorsed the appointment of his sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to fill his Senate seat for South Carolina. Sen. Roger Marshall praised Nordone, believing she would uphold the same values and intuitively vote in line with Graham’s views.

Two days after Graham’s passing due to aortic dissection, South Carolina’s Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Nordone to serve until the end of the term on January 3. Sen. Kevin Cramer emphasized the necessity of continuity in the Senate’s work, expressing approval of the governor’s decision.

President Donald Trump, a supporter of McMaster, backed Nordone’s temporary appointment. After Trump’s endorsement, McMaster officially appointed Nordone, as permitted by South Carolina law.

Sen. John Hoeven reflected on the close relationship between Graham and his sister, highlighting how Graham became her guardian after their parents’ deaths. He ensured she received education and military benefits by enlisting in the Air Force.

The quick appointment of Nordone restored the Republicans’ 53-seat majority. GOP senators often remarked on Graham’s character and his ability to form friendships within the conference.

A special primary election is scheduled, with the filing period starting on July 21 and the election on August 11. Nordone has not announced if she will run for a full term, but Reps. Nancy Mace and Ralph Norman are preparing to enter the race.
