Northern California Library Shooting Leaves Two Dead

An 18-year-old suspect carried out a deadly shooting at a library in Northern California. The incident occurred at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. According to Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge, the suspect walked through the library, returned to his vehicle to retrieve a shotgun, and then shot two men. The victims were shot at the entrance and inside the building, respectively.

Law Enforcement’s Swift Response

A 911 call reporting gunshots and screams prompted officers to arrive at the scene within two minutes. The suspect was taken into custody less than four minutes after the call was received. Chief Aldridge commended the officers for preventing further loss of life.

The Chico community, home to around 100,000 people, was stunned by this act of violence. Authorities have announced plans to enhance security at library locations.

Victims and Investigation Details

Authorities identified the victims as 46-year-old Jacob Hull and 74-year-old Robert Johnson. A child sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. Her identity remains undisclosed. The suspect fled through the library’s back exit but was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement.

Officers retrieved a shotgun from the library and two additional firearms from the suspect’s car, all registered to the suspect’s family.

Context and Community Reaction

This tragic incident adds to at least three fatal library attacks recorded in the past nine years. Misty Wright, Director of Public Libraries in Butte County, emphasized that libraries should be sanctuaries of safety and joy.

A video showed police responding heavily armed, surrounding the library, and eventually detaining the suspect.

Suspect Information

The suspect, identified as Bradley Scott Sayer, was arrested on suspicion of double murder. He had no known connections to the victims. Sayer’s attire at the time of the shooting mimicked that of Eric Harris, a perpetrator of the 1999 Columbine massacre, portraying his interest in the infamous event.

Sayer graduated from Chico High School recently and is scheduled for arraignment soon. His family has obtained legal representation.

The Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI are involved in the ongoing investigation. All library branches in Butte County were temporarily closed in response to the shooting.
