Box Office Update: A Weekend of Varied Success

Two dinosaur-themed films made moderate strides at the North American box office this weekend. Neither could outshine “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” or take the second spot from “The Odyssey.”

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” aimed at young children, and “The End of Oak Street,” a PG-13 action film, competed for third place in their theatrical debut. Studio estimates on Sunday placed the Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor movie slightly ahead with a projected $21 million, while the animated film earned $20.5 million. Nonetheless, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained unbeatable, maintaining its leading position for the third consecutive weekend.

The Sony Pictures release grossed an additional $70 million domestically, raising its North American earnings to $785.8 million. Globally, it surpassed $2 billion, becoming the eighth film to do so without inflation adjustment and reaching this milestone as the second-fastest after “Avengers: Endgame.”

“The Odyssey” also held its second position, with a $23.2 million weekend, for a domestic total of $504.7 million. With its international earnings, including $36.6 million from China, the film has accumulated over $1.2 billion globally.

“The End of Oak Street” performed above expectations, with $21 million from 3,446 locations and $26 million internationally. Its global opening totaled $47 million, against an $80 million production budget. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film features McGregor and Hathaway as suburban parents in the 1980s caught in a prehistoric twist. Despite critical acclaim with an 86% Rotten Tomatoes rating, audience reception was milder with a B CinemaScore.

Family audiences favored “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” which opened in 3,545 theaters, receiving an A CinemaScore. The film continues the franchise’s success, accumulating $69 million globally.

The Katseye documentary “Katseye: Wild Hearts” rounded out the top five with $4 million from 724 screens.

Other new releases secured spots in the top ten. “Six: The Musical Live” debuted in sixth place with $3 million, followed by “The Brink of War” with $2.7 million. The Tamil-language film “Vishwanath & Sons” earned $1.6 million, placing tenth.

Outside the top ten, Matthew McConaughey’s “The Rivals of Amziah King” earned just over $1 million from 632 theaters, while the biopic “Tony” brought in $706,676 from 37 theaters in its second weekend. The A24 film is set for wider release soon.

Overall, the box office showed strength, with summer totals surpassing $4.2 billion, 5.7% more than summer 2019. Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak stated that the figure is close to the 2013 record summer, led by “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2.” This year might rank as one of the top five summers historically.

The cumulative box office revenue for the year stands at just under $6.9 billion.
