Terrifying Rescue Amid High-rise Fire in Berlin

A severe fire engulfed an apartment building in Berlin, prompting a dramatic rescue operation. The blaze ignited in a residential high-rise in the Friedrichshain area at around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, according to reports from The Associated Press. Flames began in an apartment on the 11th floor and quickly spread upward, producing bright flames and thick smoke visible from many windows.

With more than 115 individuals affected, Berlin police stated that the response required a substantial number of personnel. The dramatic event was captured on video, showing a woman escaping the inferno by inching her way along a ledge outside an 11th-floor apartment. Despite the threat of flames and black smoke nearby, she attempted to climb down to safety.

A firefighter positioned in a rescue basket two floors below her offered assistance. After attempting to find stable footing for several tense moments, she finally decided to jump. The firefighter successfully caught her in the rescue basket, averting a potential disaster. Although the woman sustained minor injuries, she was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The emergency services rescued 25 people using fire-escape hoods and a turntable ladder. 13 individuals received medical attention for minor injuries, with some being taken to hospitals for further care. To manage the challenging situation, authorities deployed 18 fire engines, two aerial ladder trucks, nine ambulances, and additional resources. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
