CBS News dismissed Scott Pelley on Tuesday, ending his tenure in a dispute concerning the direction of ’60 Minutes,’ a leading news program in the United States.
Scott Pelley, 68, who has been a ’60 Minutes’ correspondent and formerly anchored the ‘CBS Evening News,’ began his career at CBS in 1989. During a recent staff meeting, he accused the network’s editor in chief, Bari Weiss, of negatively impacting ’60 Minutes.’ This accusation followed the recent removal of the program’s leadership and two correspondents.
Nick Bilton, who took on the role of ’60 Minutes’ executive producer last week, informed the team of Mr. Pelley’s departure in a memo, saying, “We have parted ways with Scott Pelley.” The New York Times acquired a letter from Mr. Bilton to Mr. Pelley, outlining his termination effective immediately due to cause.
In an interview following his termination, Mr. Pelley expressed continued commitment to ’60 Minutes,’ stating he risked personal safety and family happiness during his reporting in conflict zones like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Ukraine.
