Protests erupted outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey. Activists with far-left communist and socialist ties clashed with a far-right group, turning attention from the center’s conditions to political ideologies.
The conflict began after detainees alleged mistreatment, including physical and psychological harm, inadequate food, and medical neglect. In response, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) denied these claims, sharing meal menus to show detainees receive three meals a day, with options like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak. Demonstrators, both communist groups and far-right supporters, gathered, increasing tensions at the protest site.
Following violent exchanges where federal agents were attacked, Governor Mikie Sherrill ordered New Jersey State Police to manage security. She stated this would protect demonstrators from a potential “ICE surge.” The area around the detention center turned into a secure zone with barriers and fences, highlighting authorities’ response.
Attorney General Jennifer Davenport revealed that most arrested instigators were from outside New Jersey. Anti-ICE demonstrators, aligned with far-left and socialist groups, chanted for a communist revolution and distributed related literature. Meanwhile, far-right supporters, including the Proud Boys, rallied with pro-ICE flags, food, and water for law enforcement. Their presence intensified the situation, leading to confrontations with the anti-ICE crowd.
During a news conference, Governor Sherrill expressed concerns about the dangerous outcomes from national extremist groups’ involvement. She emphasized the need for protesters to focus on the detainees and their families. Sherrill urged a reduction in tensions and compliance with law enforcement directives to ensure safety.
She also highlighted recent issues where state health inspectors were restricted from viewing parts of the facility beyond the kitchen. She called on DHS to halt pressuring detainees into signing deportation papers.
