Libertyville’s senior left fielder, Carson Holmes, plays a crucial role for the reigning Class 4A state champion Wildcats. Known for his leadership, Holmes guides his less experienced teammates through challenging times.
Holmes takes his responsibility seriously. He remarks, “You want to be that guy when the time comes. We’re going to encounter tough games. When difficulties arise, rallying is essential. We’ll remind everyone that we support each other. That’s the motto: it’s going to battle.”
Batting third in the lineup, the 6-foot, 195-pound athlete often drives efforts on the field. In the Class 4A Hoffman Estates Regional championship game, Holmes reached base four times. The top-seeded Libertyville team triumphed over eighth-seeded Stevenson with a 13-3 score.
Chase Lockwood, a senior right-hander and Illinois State recruit, pitched four scoreless innings for the Wildcats, who hold a 26-10-1 record. They will face Mundelein, a North Suburban Conference rival, in the Libertyville Sectional semifinals at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
During the game on Saturday, Libertyville’s impressive nine-run third inning relied on seven walks, three hit batters, and an error. Holmes contributed the sole hit, a two-run single. He explained, “I saw a good pitch and executed it well. Our team forced the pitcher to throw. He couldn’t adjust; we did. Everyone stayed focused and avoided selfish play.”
Against the Patriots, Holmes walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and batted .500 across seven postseason games the previous year. His postseason performance included a home run in a regional final on the same field.
“We hope Carson experiences similar success,” said Libertyville coach Matt Thompson. “Having confidence in his great swing and good hands, hitting in the three hole isn’t easy. He’s earned our trust.”
After losing three Division I recruits, Libertyville crafted a different lineup around Holmes. He anticipates maintaining his role as an offensive leader. Holmes stated, “I bat for my team, not for personal gain. I approach the plate with ‘see ball, hit ball’ mentality.”
During last season’s playoffs, Holmes boasted a .412 batting average. Currently, he is hitting .276 with two homers and 23 RBIs. Despite difficulties, he remains confident, noting, “I’ve faced ups and downs but strive to stay positive and competitive. Team success outweighs personal performance.”
Holmes understands his role extends beyond hitting. Libertyville senior right fielder Jack Cenar notes, “He’s a vocal leader, especially in the outfield. His communication helps us make correct plays. He’s indispensable to the team.”
Holmes, who played two-way starting for Libertyville’s football team, looks forward to further contributions. “Baseball is the highlight of the year,” he emphasizes. “Winning regionals is now a stepping stone for the next challenge.”
