President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he had a conversation with Britain’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Andy Burnham. Trump described the discussion as “very good” and mentioned plans for a future meeting to address shared interests.

During their phone call, Trump and Burnham discussed the historic U.S.-U.K. relationship and addressed the challenges Burnham faces as he begins his tenure. Trump expressed American support, stating, “We discussed many subjects, including the outstanding relationship we have had with the UK.”

Burnham has recently taken over as Prime Minister of the UK and has called for a “new political model.” He delivered a speech outside 10 Downing Street in London after assuming office on July 20, 2026. Trump acknowledged Burnham’s significant responsibilities and promised U.S. assistance, stating, “The Prime Minister has got a big job ahead of him, but he will be able to do it and, of course, the U.SA. will be there to help!”

The conversation also covered topics such as North Sea oil, trade, the U.S.-U.K. military alliance, and efforts to remove mines from the Strait of Hormuz. Burnham’s office issued a statement indicating his anticipation of welcoming Trump to Manchester during a future visit.

“The Prime Minister outlined the UK’s commitment to securing the movement of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to support global supply chains and drive down costs for businesses and families across the country,” reported the British office.

Burnham further reiterated that defense and security remain the U.K.’s top priorities with its allies. Trump shared updates on the Middle East situation, as Burnham emphasized the importance of safely reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

On the home front, Burnham plans to focus on reindustrialization to stimulate economic growth throughout the country. Trump concluded the call feeling positive, saying, “The call was interesting, and went very well. I wished Prime Minister Burnham, GOOD LUCK AND GODSPEED!”

Andy Burnham is the seventh Prime Minister in Britain within a decade and aims to transform a nation that has seen frequent changes in leadership. Burnham follows Keir Starmer, who was Prime Minister for over two years after assuming the position in summer 2024. Notably, Trump and Burnham have exchanged criticisms before, with Trump previously labeling Burnham as “extremely liberal,” while Burnham criticized the American President openly.
