Baker Mayfield Faces Scrutiny After Buccaneers’ Loss to Browns

After a Week 1 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers struggled again in Week 2, losing to the Cleveland Browns, 23-19. The Browns staged an impressive comeback. Mayfield had a chance to lead his team to victory but struggled to reach the end zone late in the fourth quarter, marking his second consecutive defeat.

This loss has intensified scrutiny regarding Mayfield’s salary with the Buccaneers. Former NFL running back Damien Harris, now a CBS Sports analyst, expressed skepticism about Mayfield’s worth. Harris remarked, “Baker Mayfield ain’t worth that money. That’s been the tale of his career. Sometimes he plays like it, but sometimes he doesn’t.” Harris questioned why so much money is guaranteed to a quarterback who can vary in performance.

“Are you gonna get the hot hand or the cold Baker Mayfield? That’s what we’re seeing the past two games,” Harris commented.

Harris also highlighted issues with the Buccaneers as a team, noting inadequate performances from players like Emeka Egbuka and criticizing the run game. Despite these concerns, Harris emphasized Mayfield’s poor play.

Sunday’s game saw Mayfield complete 61.8% of his passes for 182 yards and one touchdown. He threw an interception, which the Browns turned into a field goal, contributing to the final score. Harris, a two-time National Champion with Alabama, noted that Mayfield had three turnovers in Week 1, handing the Bengals points and the win.

In September, ESPN reported that Mayfield inked a three-year, $165 million contract extension with the Buccaneers. An 0-2 start makes it difficult to justify such a deal, but the season is still young. Mayfield has time to adjust and potentially lead the Buccaneers to victories.

The Buccaneers will have the opportunity to improve their record in Week 3 when they host the Minnesota Vikings, who are currently 2-0. The game is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27, at 4:25 p.m. ET.
