Andrean junior Tyler Vo exemplifies gratitude in every facet of his life. Beyond athletics, Vo is driven by the enduring legacy of his family, many of whom journeyed from Vietnam to the United States. ‘That’s what motivates me to excel,’ Vo expressed, ‘my life is a gift, and I aim to be a good person, son, and teammate.’
Vo, a 5’9″, 180-pound wide receiver, has recorded 38 catches for 391 yards and three touchdowns for Andrean, the Northwest Crossroads Conference co-leader with a 6-1 overall and 4-0 conference record. Vo recounted how his grandfather served in South Vietnam’s army and assisted the U.S. during the Vietnam War. To escape possible imprisonment by North Vietnam’s forces, Vo’s grandparents fled at night along with his father and uncle. They left on a fishing boat and survived a month-long ordeal without food or water, eventually reaching the Philippines. Upon arrival, they helped the women and children disembark and set the boat ablaze to prevent being sent back to Vietnam. Their journey concluded in the United States, with the sponsorship of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Hammond, by August 1978.
Sadly, Vo’s grandmother passed away in 1981, leaving his grandfather to care for the boys without knowing English. Vo was in fourth grade when his grandfather passed. Through his parents, Tay and Sarah, owners of Aqua Spa Nails in Chesterton, Vo maintains connections with relatives in Vietnam. The family last visited Vietnam before Vo’s eighth-grade year, and relatives periodically visit the U.S.
Andrean coach Chris Skinner praised the school’s diversity, emphasizing that it reflects their community. ‘T-Vo is a positive kid; his family’s story shapes his outlook,’ Skinner noted.
Vo’s family includes his brother Thomas, a 2022 Valparaiso graduate, employed in Chicago’s supply chain sector for Daikin Comfort. Thomas graduated from Westminster College, where he played baseball. Tyler also plays baseball as a reserve outfielder and courtesy runner for Andrean, runners-up in Class 3A state last spring.
Vo shines in football, earning all-state honors last season when Andrean captured the Class 2A state title with his 82 catches for 1,109 yards and 12 touchdowns. This season, Andrean is No. 3 in Class 3A, featuring a robust group of wide receivers including sophomore Stetson Sullivan, junior Gavin Helpingstine, and senior Mark Grubbs Jr.
Andrean junior quarterback Dylan Gore lauded Vo for his leadership and versatility, characterizing him as a supportive teammate. ‘Tyler’s easygoing; we chat daily, and he’s upbeat every day,’ Gore shared.
Vo’s skills receive accolades from Skinner, himself a former Andrean receiver. Skinner appreciated Vo for his detailed route running and excellent body control. ‘Often, high school receivers rely on athleticism, but the role demands more, like precise route setting and adapting to coverage. T-Vo excels at these nuances,’ Skinner explained.
Vo aims to bring his talents to college. ‘Post-junior year is key for recruiting decisions unless you’re a national star,’ Skinner stated. Vo has attracted interest from universities such as Harvard and Columbia, driven by his parents’ emphasis on academics. He’s contemplating a pharmacy major, reinforcing that academics guide his goals. ‘Right now, my focus is on transitioning to college-level football and academics,’ Vo concluded.
