Historic Time Capsule Revealed for America’s 250th Anniversary

Rosie Rios, a spokesperson for America 250, announced the contents of a historic time capsule that will be buried at Independence Mall, Philadelphia, on July 4th, 2026. This event marks a major milestone as the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary.

Items to Preserve American Heritage

The time capsule will include significant items such as a pocket Constitution signed by Supreme Court Justices, a crystal from the 2026 New Year’s Eve ball drop, and an NFL America250 coin. These tokens aim to preserve America’s narrative for future generations.

The vessel, made of stainless steel and waterproof, will weigh about 900 pounds. It will contain nearly 200 contributions from across the United States, representing all three branches of government and covering 50 states, D.C., five territories, and everyday Americans.

“The contents of the time capsule are amazing,” said Rosie Rios, Chair of America 250.

A Symbolic Location

Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park has been chosen as the burial site, emphasizing its historical significance as the birthplace of the nation. The location will serve as a fitting place for the time capsule, which is planned to be reopened in 2276, celebrating 500 years of American history.

Rios described Philadelphia as a natural choice, believing it will attract visitors in the year 2276 when the capsule is retrieved.

Contents Reflecting American Life

The items curated for the time capsule reflect America’s history, culture, and identity. In addition to the aforementioned items, the capsule includes a message in a bottle from Coca-Cola, an American flag flown at the 2026 Rose Parade, and various other artifacts.

A capstone and selected artifacts will be displayed in Philadelphia to remind future generations about the rich heritage that awaits them.
