The post was captioned humorously with “We did?” followed by, “Paige Bueckers on the bet she made with Angel Reese at All-Star Weekend on tonight’s matchup.” The WNBA removed the post promptly but not before it had spread on social media.

A spokesperson stated that while the post was meant to be lighthearted, players are aware of the league’s strict policies against betting on WNBA games. These rules are reiterated annually through training. The league recognized that the post was inappropriate, removed it, and internally addressed the issue.

The spokesperson added that this will serve as a reminder to players involved about the potential negative consequences of discussing wagers on WNBA games, even if intended as jokes.

Both teams, the Wings and the Dream, deferred to the league’s statement for comment. The WNBA’s collective bargaining agreement strictly prohibits any form of wagering and outlines possible penalties such as fines, suspension, or disqualification, enforceable by the commissioner.

In the game on Wednesday, the Dream overcame a 15-point deficit to win 82-81 against the Wings. Reese accomplished 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Bueckers contributed 16 points and six assists.
