Todd Monken Unfazed by Browns Fans’ Reaction to Deshaun Watson Decision

The Cleveland Browns are gearing up for the 2026 season with Deshaun Watson leading as their starting quarterback. Some fans disapprove, but head coach Todd Monken seems unconcerned.

Watson has faced criticism from Cleveland fans, particularly after expressing dissatisfaction with them publicly. Despite this, Monken emphasized during his recent press conference that fan opinion does not influence his decision-making.

Monken stated, “Would I prefer that we would all be on the same page? Yeah, but that has nothing to do with my decision, and it can never have anything to do with my decision.” He stressed that his priority is deciding what’s best for the team throughout the season.

Choosing Watson as the starter was based on his ability to generate explosive plays. Monken explained, “You’re not going to be elite on offense and score points if you can’t create explosives. It’s challenging to drive the length of the field without an explosive play.” Studies suggest a higher probability of scoring touchdowns or field goals with an explosive play during a drive.

Every offensive coordinator aims for explosive plays without turning over the ball. It’s a core strategy in the game. Monken expressed confidence in Watson’s ability to advance the ball, saying, “I’m confident in Deshaun and our ability to push the ball down the field, otherwise we wouldn’t be starting him.”

Watson’s ability to deliver these big plays is crucial for maintaining his role as the number one quarterback. Failure to do so could jeopardize his position in Cleveland.
