The Aspen Acres Fire continues to burn in Rye, Colorado, as thunderstorms with high winds pose challenges for containment efforts. This massive wildfire has affected areas south of Colorado Springs, spreading across Pueblo and Custer counties. As of Sunday morning, it has consumed over 86,000 acres and stands at 13% containment.

Officials have issued evacuation orders and alerts for Custer, Pueblo, Huerfano, and Fremont counties. The National Weather Service predicts scattered showers and thunderstorms could hit south central and southwest Colorado, which might aid in firefighting. However, there are concerns about road damage and flash flooding in burned areas. The main threats include gusty winds up to 50 mph and lightning, according to the NWS office in Pueblo.

Red flag warnings and air quality alerts are active statewide. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment advises residents to limit outdoor activities due to heavy smoke. Other fires in Colorado include the Ferris Fire in the southwest, spreading across more than 42,000 acres and 7% contained. The Gold Mountain Fire has grown to over 25,000 acres and is currently uncontained.

A memorial service was held for firefighters Emily Barker, Sydney Watson, and Nick Hutcherson, who lost their lives battling wildfires on the Colorado-Utah border on June 27. A burnover incident, where firefighters are overtaken by flames and must seek shelter, led to their tragic deaths.

Two other firefighters survived and received treatment for burns. In tribute, Colorado Governor Jared Polis ordered flags to be flown at half-staff, honoring their sacrifice. “These three brave heroes ran towards the flames, putting themselves in harm’s way to protect Coloradans,” Polis stated.

Across the border, the Babylon Fire in southern Utah has engulfed over 90,000 acres and remains uncontained. Forecasters expect hot and dry conditions will continue through Monday, further complicating containment efforts.
