Wild Baseball Game in Las Vegas Highlights Effects of High Elevation

The team formerly known as the Oakland Athletics currently plays in West Sacramento, with plans to move to a new stadium on The Strip in Las Vegas. In an effort to build its fanbase in its future home, the A’s scheduled six home games at Las Vegas Ballpark this week. This stadium, usually home to the Las Vegas Aviators, a Triple-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, is located in Summerlin and sits at an elevation of over 3,000 feet.

Monday night’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers showcased the unique conditions at the Las Vegas Ballpark resulting in an unusual 15-14 victory for the Athletics in 12 innings. Despite the stadium’s larger dimensions compared to other major league ballparks, its high elevation contributed to a high-scoring outcome. This score line has been rare, occurring only 18 times since 1900, and only twice since 2000.

The game saw a combined total of 11 home runs, even with the A’s losing. Highlight performances included Tyler Soderstrom and Nick Kurtz, both of whom hit two home runs each. Both teams accumulated 31 hits, utilized 14 different pitchers, and threw an astonishing 441 pitches in total.

In the tenth inning, the Brewers took a seemingly commanding lead with four runs, yet the A’s tied it thanks to key hits. Brewers catcher William Contreras hit one of the longest home runs of the season, measuring 463 feet, showcasing the impact of the elevation.

The dramatic ending included a surprising home run by A’s catcher Jonah Heim, which had an expected batting average of .000 according to MLB’s Baseball Savant Statcast, underlining how elevation can affect gameplay. His routine pop-up unexpectedly became a game-tying home run by exceeding the fence.

The future stadium for the Athletics is set to be constructed on The Strip, slightly lower in elevation but still conducive to high scores due to similar dimensions. It will likely lead to more high-scoring games unless roof adjustments significantly alter play conditions.

The move to Las Vegas represents a substantial adjustment, and it is clear that the unique climate and elevation will continue to influence game outcomes. The development points to increased attractiveness of A’s hitters for fantasy baseball.
