A report released on July 4 criticizes the National Museum of American History. The report accuses the museum of downplaying the founders’ roles while emphasizing social justice.

The White House’s Domestic Policy Council authored the report, stating, “To the extent that there is a story told at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, it is not one of ‘the victory of freedom and genius of our country’ but one of regret, tragedy, and shame.”

This report represents a significant critique of the museum’s portrayal of American history. It aligns with efforts by the Trump administration to influence the Smithsonian into adopting a version of history that President Trump defines as “patriotic.”

The 162-page document states that the Smithsonian Institution — which manages 21 museums and the National Zoo — has not fulfilled its commitments to the public. The report specifically targets the National Museum of American History, accusing it of an anti-white bias and misrepresenting the nation’s founding events.

The report, titled “Saving America’s Story: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History Erases Our Heritage,” claims that the museum fails to present U.S. history accurately.

The report states, “Our central finding is not that the museum has simply added overlooked stories, corrected perceived errors, or broadened its historical scope. Rather, it is that museum leadership has explicitly adopted an ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit and discourage our citizens.”
