Rebuilding Life After an Acid Attack

Nafiah Ikram was 27 years old when she faced an unthinkable attack. Close to her home in March 2021, a stranger threw acid in her face. Since that day, she has endured numerous surgeries to treat her injuries. Today, she is working to rebuild her life while facing a significant development in her case.

In July 2026, Nafiah entered a Long Island nail salon dressed in a pink and white jogger suit, complete with matching pink headphones. The salon visit is a personal ritual for her, a step toward reclaiming normalcy and confronting her reflection, which she once referred to as monstrous following the attack. The chemical attack left her with lasting scars on her olive skin, a constant reminder of the incident.

“I’m trying my best to find my way back to the version of myself that I remember, because she was happy,” Nafiah remarked. The pursuit of her past happiness is ongoing. She occasionally glimpses her former self during salon visits, in bedroom mirrors, or in moments of quiet contemplation. These instances provide fleeting self-acceptance, yet she acknowledges the distance remaining between her past and present identities.

Nafiah has always embraced her feminine side, enjoying makeup and dressing up. The attack’s impact traces back to a hooded stranger who targeted her after a shift at a CVS Pharmacy. This person’s face haunted her nightly for years, yet Nassau County police had little progress in identifying them.
