FIFA officials initially stated that teams cannot appeal red cards or suspensions. However, Balogun will play in the upcoming game at Lumen Field, Seattle, as the ban is on hold. FIFA confirmed his eligibility on Sunday afternoon. A statement from FIFA mentioned that Balogun’s suspension is under probation for one year. If he repeats a similar offense, the suspension will be enforced.
U.S. President Donald Trump praised FIFA’s decision on Truth Social, appreciating them for righting a perceived wrong. The team discovered the news on the way to training at the University of Washington. “It’s a big boost for us,” said Christian Pulisic. Chris Richards mentioned they first saw the news on social media, noting Balogun’s exuberant reaction.
FIFA’s disciplinary code allows suspension of penalties under certain conditions. Cristiano Ronaldo benefitted from a similar ruling. The forward has been influential during the tournament, scoring twice against Paraguay and once against Bosnia. He has consistently contributed to each World Cup game he’s played.
The red card incident took place when Balogun reached out while chasing the ball, accidentally stepping on Muharemovic’s leg. Initially, the referee did not give a red card until a video review indicated a “serious foul.” FIFA acknowledges serious foul play as an action posing excessive force or danger to an opponent.
Though suspensions are not appealable, FIFA can extend such bans. Paraguay’s Miguel Almiron had a one-game ban, while Qatar’s Assim Madibo received a five-match ban after a serious injury-causing foul.
Criticism arose from teammates and analysts. U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino disagreed with the red card decision, calling it an accidental incident. Christian Pulisic shared similar sentiments and expressed support for Balogun.
Having Balogun available is beneficial for the USMNT, as he plays a critical role. Before the suspension lift, there was uncertainty about who would replace him. Balogun’s scoring and movement are crucial for the team. His ability to create space and his physical play have been assets.
