The United States has started to redirect travelers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda to select airports for detailed health evaluations. The goal is to identify those exposed to the Ebola virus.

John F. Kennedy International Airport will begin screening these travelers for Ebola after 11:59 p.m. on Thursday. It joins three other U.S. airports already conducting health screenings: Washington Dulles International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced in a release that J.F.K. Airport has previous experience with such health checks during past public health emergencies and is prepared for these heightened procedures. Travelers from the affected regions will undergo screenings regardless of their immigration or citizenship status. U.S. Customs and Border Protection made an earlier announcement about the commencement of these screenings at J.F.K. Airport.

The current Ebola outbreak has resulted in over 1,000 cases and more than 200 deaths. Public health specialists argue that last year’s disbanding of the U.S. Agency for International Development has left the nation poorly equipped for detection and response, enabling the swift spread of the virus.

The Trump administration is committed to preventing Ebola from entering the United States, even taking the step of denying entry to infected American citizens. On Thursday, senior officials introduced plans for a 50-bed quarantine center in Kenya for American citizens exposed to the virus. Adjacent isolation and biocontainment facilities aim to manage those who test positive or exhibit symptoms during quarantine. The quarantine site is set to open on Friday; however, the timeline for the others remains uncertain.

The CDC and State Department continue to seek enhanced treatment facilities in Europe for Americans needing advanced Ebola treatment, according to the officials.
