Memphis has seen a dramatic reduction in violent crime, with some experts citing it as a model for cities across the United States. According to data from the Memphis Police Department, violent crime has decreased by over 40% in 2026 compared to the same timeframe in 2025. This change follows the establishment of the Memphis Safe Task Force by President Donald Trump, which brought together local, state, and federal law enforcement as well as the Tennessee National Guard.

Statistics reveal the following reductions in specific crimes from 2025 to 2026:

Memphis is absolutely a blueprint for other cities around the nation,” stated Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith, spokesperson for the National Police Association.
The effective collaboration of different law enforcement levels and other judicial participants has been key to these results. This partnership has resulted in more than 7,400 arrests for serious offenses, including homicides and gang violence, and the seizure of over 1,200 illegal weapons.

The change in crime rates has been noted by Memphis residents. Bobby Hardin, a local, mentioned that crime is not as severe as before, highlighting an improved atmosphere in the city. For the first time since 2019, recorded murders in Memphis have fallen below 200.
Smith believes that visible law enforcement plays a significant role in deterring crime. She pointed out that arrests, followed by prosecution and incarceration, signal that repeat offenses will not go unpunished. She also compared Memphis’ success with Washington, D.C., where a similar reduction in violent crime has been observed. Washington has seen a 53% decrease in homicides in 2026 versus 2025, with overall violent crime down by 5%.
