Tua Tagovailoa’s Challenging Reunion
Tua Tagovailoa returned to South Florida as an Atlanta Falcon to face his former team, the Miami Dolphins. The reunion was far from joyous, focusing less on celebration and more on dysfunction. For six seasons, Tagovailoa struggled to find success with the Dolphins. Despite expectations, both sides failed to achieve their goals.
Tagovailoa’s tenure with the Dolphins was marred by unresolved issues with some coaches who weren’t supportive and injuries that limited his performance. The Dolphins had hoped Tagovailoa would become the franchise’s leading star, but neither he nor the team reached the anticipated championship level.
The offseason saw the separation of Tagovailoa and the Dolphins, leading to an exhibition game at Hard Rock Stadium where the two parties faced off for the first time since their split. The sentiment that all involved might be better off post-separation was prevalent, yet no significant improvement has been seen thus far.
Tagovailoa’s Status with the Atlanta Falcons
Tagovailoa is vying for the starting quarterback position with the Falcons, but has yet to secure it. Michael Penix Jr., recovering from knee surgery, posed little competition during training camp, yet Tagovailoa has been unable to decisively claim the starting role.
Miami Dolphins parted ways with Tagovailoa despite absorbing a $55 million salary hit for 2026. This decision is part of broader efforts to address cap issues from the previous management.
Miami Dolphins’ Rebuilding Phase
The Dolphins are embarking on yet another rebuilding season with Malik Willis positioned as quarterback and Jeff Hafley as head coach. This restructuring makes them arguably one of the least talented teams in the NFL at present.
The Friday night matchup, dubbed informally as ‘The Sadness Bowl,’ saw two entities struggling to find their footing: the rebuilding Dolphins and a quarterback yet to prove himself. A sparse crowd at Hard Rock Stadium made their disappointment known, having hoped Tagovailoa would have led them to championship glory.
While Tagovailoa completed 7 out of 8 passes, the performance lacked genuine impact. The Dolphins, resting their starters, relied on backups who only highlighted the team’s lack of depth. The small crowd witnessed competition from both a quarterback and backup defense that shared similar deficiencies.
Game Performance Insights
Tagovailoa managed a successful drive, completing three out of four passes, leading to a touchdown. However, the highlight—a 43-yard pass to Kyle Pitts—was less impressive upon closer inspection, as it started as a mere 4-yard screen turned into a lengthy run due to a scattered defense.
During subsequent drives, Tagovailoa fumbled a snap, recovered by the Dolphins, and later saw Brian Robinson’s fumble also recovered by Miami’s defense. Miami’s defense, set to face challenges in the regular season, thus secured temporary victories.
Despite these efforts, neither Tagovailoa nor the Dolphins have shown readiness for immediate success in their respective quests for improvement.
