Nashville Airport May Be Renamed After Dolly Parton

Nashville International Airport could soon carry the name of Tennessee icon Dolly Parton. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and the airport made the announcement on Friday. The celebrated country music legend and philanthropist, a native of rural Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 80.

The airport and Governor Lee announced their intention to honor Parton by renaming the airport. They aim to create a lasting tribute to her significant impact on Tennessee and the world. The proposal will be discussed at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s meeting on September 17.

“Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state,” Governor Lee stated. He highlighted Parton’s journey from her mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages. Lee noted that it would be fitting for Nashville International Airport to bear Parton’s name. It would welcome travelers with her enduring legacy of music, generosity, faith, and kindness.

Governor Lee also engaged with Parton’s team about the proposal, and they expressed their gratitude. The aim is to celebrate Parton as Tennessee’s favorite daughter.

A petition to rename the airport after Parton was launched more than a year ago. As of Friday night, it has gathered over 160,000 signatures. The initiative also received backing from a Nashville City Council member and a Tennessee state representative.

Parton’s death, following a brief battle with cancer, touched many hearts. Her passing prompted tributes from fans, celebrities, and politicians across the nation and the world.

Known for her music, extravagant hairstyles, Southern charm, wit, and generosity, Parton was an admired figure across multiple generations. Additionally, she was a savvy businesswoman and dedicated philanthropist. Parton established the Dollywood Foundation to support property relief and educational programs in East Tennessee. Her Imagination Library initiative continues to deliver free books to children worldwide.
