The Boston Red Sox achieved a remarkable feat by winning 15 consecutive games, a streak last seen in 1946 when Ted Williams led the team to an American League championship. On Wednesday, the Red Sox matched the historical record by defeating the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged the significance of the accomplishment. “I’ve read some stuff. I know Ted Williams was around back then, so I’m aware of the year and how long it’s been. It’s cool that they’ve accomplished something great,” he said.
Following the victory, the team took extra moments on the field, celebrating to the tune of “Dirty Water” by The Standells. The atmosphere was equally jubilant in the clubhouse. Tracy noted, “Oh, yeah, absolutely between the staff. We were realizing the guys were going crazy in the locker room — they always do — but even more emphasis right now with what we’re going through. Everybody enjoys it for sure.”
The Red Sox’s season turned around dramatically after starting 10-17 under former manager Alex Cora. As of July 1, the team was 37-48, occupying the last spot in the AL East. However, since then, Tracy has led the team to this impressive streak, making him the first manager since the 19th century to achieve a 15-game winning streak without starting the season in the primary role.
In the match against Baltimore, Boston secured a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Starter Jake Bennett limited the Orioles to three runs over 5 2/3 innings. Caleb Durbin, known for his decisive homer earlier in the series, noted the importance of each out in the later innings. “I think in the seventh inning I’m counting them down a little bit,” he commented with a smile.
After the final out, left fielder Jarren Duran shared his appreciation for the moment with fellow outfielders Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu. “When I get to go see (them), I take a look around and I get to enjoy that moment, that’s always fun,” Duran remarked.
Reflecting on the historic season, Durbin said, “You look back at it and think about where you’re doing it and how long this franchise has existed. It’s been incredible. It feels great. One win closer to 16 to break it. I’m just glad we’ve got another one to play today.”
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz also expressed admiration for the Red Sox’s achievement. “I mean, a 15-game heater is really impressive,” said Albernaz, a lifelong fan having grown up nearby. “You know, it’s tough to win one game in the big leagues and then going 15 straight, it’s really impressive.”
