Trump Cancels Housing Act Signing to Push SAVE America Act

President Donald Trump announced a sudden halt to the signing of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act. He emphasized the need to pass the SAVE America Act. “Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby canceled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” he wrote on Truth Social.

The House passed the Housing Act with a 358–32 vote, indicating widespread support. The bill aims to increase the housing supply and reduce costs. It also prohibits large investors from purchasing single-family homes.

Trump criticized the act, calling it an “Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren centric housing bill,” and said it was less important compared to other issues like lower interest rates. He emphasized the urgency of the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE America Act includes provisions for voter ID and citizenship verification. With midterms approaching, it has gained attention in the Senate despite opposition. House Speaker Mike Johnson agreed with Trump’s decision. He expressed hope of advancing a similar election-integrity proposal through budget reconciliation.

“I spoke to the president for 20 minutes before I went in and gave that rousing speech to the House Republicans this morning,” Johnson shared at a news conference. “We passed it three times in the House, confirming the importance of citizenship proof to vote and the need for photo ID.” He added that 90% of Americans support these measures.

Despite bipartisan progress on housing, the Trump-backed ban on large investor purchases faces resistance. The housing package proposes loosening regulations on factory-built homes and easing environmental reviews. It encourages local governments to update zoning for more home construction.

Homebuyers have faced challenges, with the national median home price over $400,000 according to Realtor.com. The bill reflects ongoing efforts to address housing affordability issues.
