Socialist Candidates Win Big in New York Democratic Primaries

The New York Democratic primary races have witnessed significant shifts as socialist candidates claim notable victories. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani views these wins as a ‘new chapter’ for Democrats, marking an ascent for the party’s progressive wing.

Rachel Bovard has expressed concern over this ‘growing movement,’ suggesting that its radical propositions, such as abolishing the Senate and Supreme Court, could transition from fringe elements to dominate the Democratic Party’s core.

In a related development, former President Donald Trump criticized the socialist success in several New York congressional districts. He voiced a stark warning about ‘downtrodden’ blue states, asserting that history shows such states fare worse under socialist leadership.

The victorious candidates, endorsed by Mamdani, have nearly unobstructed paths to Congress in their predominantly Democratic districts. The winners include Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York’s 13th Congressional District, State Rep. Claire Valdez in New York’s 7th Congressional District, and Brad Lander in New York’s 10th Congressional District.

Avila Chevalier and Valdez are affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). This organization, once viewed as fringe, is now gaining significant influence within the Democratic Party.

Brad Lander, previously a DSA member, departed the group in 2023 following its contentious stance on the October 2023 attack by Hamas, which resulted in 1,200 casualties at an Israeli concert.

Avila Chevalier successfully unseated five-term incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who was notable for being the first former undocumented immigrant in Congress. Her campaign promoted policies like abolishing ICE, ending deportations, and implementing socialized healthcare.

Her campaign faced controversies over past social media posts, where Avila Chevalier advocated for the government’s seizure of private property, labeled President Joe Biden as a ‘rapist,’ criticized former Vice President Kamala Harris, and called for the abolition of police.

Despite the controversies, Avila Chevalier triumphed over Espaillat by a margin of 3.5 points.

Claire Valdez, another successful candidate, already serves as a New York State Assembly member. She clinched her primary by a substantial margin and is anticipated to succeed retiring Rep. Nydia Velázquez in January.

Trump reiterated his stance against socialism, stating emphatically that America will ‘NEVER be a Communist Country.’

Brad Lander overcame incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman, prompting Trump to criticize Goldman, who has been a vocal critic and played a key role in a 2019 impeachment attempt against Trump.

In conclusion, Trump sarcastically congratulated Mamdani’s achievements and highlighted his own successful endorsements in recent primaries, lamenting the media’s lack of coverage regarding his electoral influence.

The White House opted not to issue further comments.
