House Republican leadership is criticizing the Democratic Party following recent primary victories by far-left candidates. These wins are linked to groups like the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which some Republicans argue indicate a significant shift within the party.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise expressed concern about this trend. In an interview with Fox News Digital, Scalise stated, “There’s a Bolshevik revolution that’s overtaking the Democrat Party with candidates espousing radical, communist viewpoints.” He emphasized that these victories show Democrats moving further left than many American voters prefer.
“This is surely not your father’s Democrat Party,” Scalise remarked. “There’s never been a clearer contrast between Republicans valuing freedom and Democrats moving toward socialism.”
Recent primaries have seen DSA-linked candidates overcome established Democrats. Notably, in New York, candidates backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a DSA member, defeated incumbents like Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Dan Goldman. Despite these wins, it’s important to note Brad Lander, Goldman’s challenger, distanced himself from the DSA following events in Israel.
In Denver, another DSA-backed candidate unseated longtime Rep. Diana DeGette, securing these candidates’ paths to November elections. Scalise warned of a Democratic “civil war,” predicting struggles between liberals and socialists within the party.
Responding to the Republican critiques, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Rep. Suzan DelBene emphasized her party’s focus. She stated, “Our campaign revolves around lowering costs and improving life for Americans, contrasting the GOP’s attacks, which lack focus on substantial, pocketbook issues.”
Republicans face a challenge in maintaining control of the House due to historical trends disadvantaging the president’s party during midterms. Despite this, GOP leaders hope to energize their base in August by engaging with constituents.
