Elaine Chao, the wife of Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, returned to the United States from China on Tuesday. Her return follows growing questions about her whereabouts while her husband remained hospitalized.
Chao’s staff informed Newsweek that she had returned from China, asserting over the weekend that there was no need for her to come back earlier despite concerns over McConnell’s health. McConnell, 84, has been absent from the Senate for several weeks as he serves out his final term ending in January 2027.

Elaine Chao is noted as one of the most prominent Asian American figures in current U.S. politics. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, Chao immigrated to the United States with her family as a child, eventually becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen.
Chao served as labor secretary under President George W. Bush and as transportation secretary during President Donald Trump’s first term. She marked history as the first Asian American woman appointed to a presidential Cabinet, holding various leadership roles in government, business, and nonprofit sectors.
She married Mitch McConnell in 1993, establishing themselves as one of Washington’s influential political couples. They do not have children together, but McConnell has three daughters from his previous marriage to Sherrill Redmon.
Chao’s Recent Activities in China

Chinese state media reported that Chao met with Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing on June 17, three days after McConnell’s hospitalization. Chao’s spokesperson clarified that her trip was long-planned and emphasized that McConnell’s health at the time did not require her immediate return.
On Tuesday, Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican former Georgia Representative, controversially suggested on TMZ D.C. that Chao might be acting as a Chinese spy. Chao’s office did not respond to Newsweek’s queries regarding Greene’s comments.
Chao’s Family Business Connections
Chao’s ties to China, alongside her family’s shipping business, Foremost Group, have been scrutinized over the years. A Department of Transportation watchdog in 2021 found that Chao used her office to benefit family interests. This included planning a proposed trip to China and managing matters related to her father’s activities.
Findings from the watchdog were forwarded to the Department of Justice, which opted not to pursue prosecution. Ethical questions also surrounded Chao’s involvement of family members with ties to the shipping industry during a planned 2017 China trip and on the COVID-19 pandemic-relief loans received by Foremost Group.
McConnell’s Health Status
Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized following a medical emergency at his Washington residence on June 14. Limited information about his condition has been released, with his office stating that he is receiving care and continuing to recover.
