Trent Thornton’s Frustration on the Mound

Chicago Cubs relief pitcher Trent Thornton showed visible frustration during a recent game against the Milwaukee Brewers. This occurred during the top of the fifth inning of the Cubs’ 9-5 loss at Wrigley Field.

Thornton entered the game in the previous inning with a man on third and two outs, with the Cubs trailing 6-5. He successfully struck out Luis Lara, averting a scoring threat.

In the next inning’s start, he managed to strike out Christian Yelich but proceeded to give up three consecutive bases. Joey Ortiz walked, and singles by Cooper Pratt and Jackson Chourio followed. Manager Craig Counsell then decided to remove Thornton from the game.

“F—!”

His reaction to being pulled was intense. In the dugout, Thornton slammed his glove and vocalized his frustration.

Despite Thornton’s setback, relief pitcher Ryan Rolison stepped up, retiring the next two hitters. This kept the score at 6-5, albeit the Cubs couldn’t seize the momentum to score again.

Thornton, in his debut season with the Cubs, has generally been a reliable reliever. In 44 appearances, he holds a 3.40 ERA across 45 innings, including three saves.

The loss marked the third game in a four-game series against the Brewers, pivotal for the Cubs. They stand at 78-62 while the Brewers lead at 87-53. The Cubs aim to balance the series in their upcoming game.
