Yankees Triumph Over Mets Amid 9/11 Anniversary Commemorations

The New York Yankees marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a victory over the New York Mets. Outfielder Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer against rookie pitcher Nolan McLean in the second inning. This contributed to the Yankees’ 6-4 win on Friday night.

During the game at Yankee Stadium, a spectator carrying a Palestinian flag disrupted the event by running onto the field. Security officials swiftly tackled the intruder, who reportedly timed his invasion at 9:11 p.m. Despite some fans throwing drinks, loud chants of ‘U-S-A’ emerged as security removed the man from the field.

The disturbance took place during the seventh inning of the game between the Yankees and Mets on September 11, 2026. After the incident, play resumed, allowing the Yankees to continue commemorating the anniversary with special tributes.

Both teams wore caps that honored first responders from the FDNY and NYPD. Across Major League Baseball, players donned caps featuring a special ‘We Shall Never Forget’ patch. These gestures were part of the broader commemorations that included ‘God Bless America’ and moments of silence.

Aside from Bellinger’s standout performance, designated hitter Ben Rice also contributed with a homer. The Yankees, after improving their record to 85-62, reached a season-high 23 games above .500. Despite their victory, they still trailed the Tampa Bay Rays by three games in the American League East.

Rookie Spencer Jones added to the team’s scoring with an RBI single in the first inning, while Ryan McMahon hit another RBI single in the eighth inning. Pitcher Carlos Rodón showcased his skill by allowing just two runs and three hits over 6.3 innings. He notched eight strikeouts, including two against slugger Juan Soto, who faced boos from Yankee fans.

Bellinger’s homer followed the ceremonial first pitch thrown by Brielle Saracini, daughter of Victor Saracini, the pilot of United Airlines Flight 175. The flight tragically struck the South Tower of the World Trade Center during the attacks.

Bellinger demonstrated skill by hitting a full-count curveball into the right field seats, giving the Yankees a 4-1 lead. Rice added his 37th homer in the fifth inning, sending a sinker into the left field seats. The rivalry continues with the Subway Series set for Game 2 on Saturday at 1:35 p.m.
