The Stanley Cup Finals: Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights and the Trophy Superstition

The Stanley Cup Final is set with the Carolina Hurricanes facing the Vegas Golden Knights. Both teams advanced by avoiding touching their respective conference championship trophies. This decision reflects a common superstition among hockey players who believe that handling these trophies can jeopardize their chances of winning the Stanley Cup.

The Eastern Conference awards the Prince of Wales Trophy, while the Western Conference presents the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl. The superstition suggests these trophies are distractions from the ultimate goal, the Stanley Cup itself.

Historically, touching or not touching the conference trophies has produced mixed results. There are instances of teams losing even when avoiding the trophy, while some teams win despite touching it.

Vegas Golden Knights: Superstition and History

The Vegas Golden Knights’ captain, Mark Stone, recently opted not to touch the Clarence Campbell Bowl. This decision mirrors their successful approach in 2023, when avoiding the trophy coincided with defeating the Florida Panthers for the Stanley Cup. Conversely, in 2018, during their inaugural season, then-captain Deryk Engelland embraced the trophy, yet the team lost.

Currently, the Golden Knights hold a 1-1 record in the Cup Finals, winning when avoiding the trophy, but losing when touching it.

Carolina Hurricanes: A Tale of Three Finals

The Hurricanes are making their third appearance in the Finals since their initial run in 2002. During that year, captain Ron Francis touched the Prince of Wales Trophy, but the team lost to the Detroit Red Wings, who featured one of the most formidable lineups in NHL history.

In 2006, captain Rod Brind’Amour refrained from touching the trophy after the conference win against the Buffalo Sabres. The Hurricanes went on to triumph over the Edmonton Oilers for the Cup.

This year, Carolina again avoided the Prince of Wales Trophy, possibly influenced by their head coach’s advice.

The challenge of superstition awaits, as only one team will break tradition and secure the Stanley Cup. They face off Tuesday night in Raleigh.
