A 17-year-old boy suffered a shark bite while boating with his father off Galveston Island, Texas, on Memorial Day weekend. The incident occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on Monday as the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office received reports of the attack, prompting the U.S. Coast Guard’s involvement.
The teenager was on a boat with his father and another person about two hours offshore. Reports indicate he was bitten while trying to pull the shark onto their vessel. His father quickly used a tourniquet to control the bleeding and headed toward shore. However, the boat became disabled near the Gulf jetties, necessitating a Coast Guard emergency response.
Rescue crews boarded the vessel, applied a second tourniquet, and transported the teen to safety. He received medical attention at the University of Texas Medical Branch after reaching shore. Details about his injuries or the shark species involved have not been disclosed.
The cause of the boat’s malfunction remains unknown, and authorities have not provided further information regarding how the shark was brought on board. The Coast Guard and Galveston County Sheriff’s Office have yet to comment further on the incident.
