Increased Drone Activity Near Airports Raises Concerns

FAA officials are concerned about the growing presence of drones around airports. Recently, a JetBlue flight encountered a drone near JFK Airport. Similarly, a helicopter nearly collided with a toy airplane in the vicinity.

Drones often lack transponders, which complicates tracking. The FAA has initiated a public safety campaign to address this issue. They receive about 100 complaints each month concerning potential drone interference. Fines for such interference can reach up to $100,000.

Fireworks Incident Involves Delta Airlines Flight

On July 4, Delta Air Lines Flight 1076 experienced a different threat when a fireworks mortar struck it during its descent into Chicago Midway International Airport. Despite the incident, the flight, originating from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, landed safely at Midway at around 8:30 p.m. local time.

The A319 aircraft, carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, reported no injuries. Delta confirmed the aircraft landed and proceeded to the gate without declaring an emergency. Post-flight examination ensured no damage to the aircraft.

Investigation Underway for Fireworks Incident

Following the event, Chicago police noted minor paint damage to the plane. Further inspections aimed to uncover any additional problems. However, Delta’s examination found no evidence of damage.

The origin of the fireworks remains unknown, and authorities are yet to identify those involved. Delta has pledged complete cooperation with the FAA and other relevant bodies as investigations proceed.
