Defense attorneys seek data concerning witness credibility. This scope includes misconduct records, any inconsistent statements, disciplinary findings, plea agreements, or promises of advantageous treatment.

In March 2023, Alex Murdaugh, a former influential lawyer from South Carolina’s Lowcountry, was convicted of murdering his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul. These incidents occurred at their hunting estate in June 2021. However, the case reeled into uncertainty after accusations that court clerk Rebecca Hill improperly addressed jurors, motivated by the allure of fame and attention.
The South Carolina Supreme Court rescinded Murdaugh’s convictions for murder and weapons charges. This decision mandates new legal proceedings.
Murdaugh’s attorneys also requested fresh forensic or DNA result reviews. Moreover, they pursue details related to the “Side of Road” and narcotics inquiries conducted by SLED. The legal team expects written assurances from prosecutors confirming that a thorough search has been done and all relevant materials have been shared.
The defense has specified a 30-day timeframe for this information. The status hearing with Judge Debra McCaslin featured prosecuting attorney Creighton Waters and defense attorney Dick Harpootlian.
