Italy Under Highest Heat Alert
Italy has placed all major cities on red alert for the first time this year due to the extreme temperatures. The country’s Health Ministry has advised all 27 cities under its surveillance system of the heightened health risk. This alert extends from Trieste to Palermo, indicating a general health risk. Authorities recommend avoiding direct sunlight, staying indoors when possible, and drinking water to stay hydrated.
The heat has led to changes in operating times at tourist attractions. Mist fans have been installed at these locations, and an urban beach along the Tiber River has been opened to provide relief for residents and visitors. Claudio Rocchi, a local resident, expressed appreciation for these measures, highlighting their importance.
Record Temperatures in Austria and Slovakia
Austria and Slovakia have both reported record-breaking temperatures. Slovakia recorded an all-time high of 42.2 C (108 F) at Dolne Plachtince. The severe conditions have caused reduced operation at the Gabčíkovo hydroelectric power plant due to low water levels in the Danube River.
In Austria, a record high of 41.2 C (106.2 F) was noted in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg. The country faces drought conditions with rainfall significantly below average. Climatologist Alexander Orlik noted that such dryness hasn’t been seen since 1885.
Impact on Hungary’s Nuclear Energy
Hungary’s nuclear power output has been reduced due to drought affecting the Danube River, essential for cooling reactors. The government has issued emergency measures, urging reductions in electricity consumption. Freight train operations and decorative lighting have been curtailed.
Prominent companies, including Mol and Audi, are curbing electricity usage. Parliamentary sessions have been canceled to save energy. Hungary has also recorded record-high nighttime temperatures.
Germany and France Battle Drought and Fires
Germany’s waterways, including the Rhine River, face low water levels, affecting transport and industry. Authorities are addressing these challenges by considering environmental resilience measures. In France, the fire alert level remains high as authorities deal with a major wildfire in the Var region. Fires cover approximately 60 square kilometers, though there’s risk of reignition.
Elsewhere, the effects of dry conditions are felt, such as in England where a grass fire temporarily disrupted operations at Heathrow Airport. Authorities across the Balkans also face wildfire and drought conditions.
