A lawsuit filed in McHenry County Circuit Court claims that a boat crash on July 25 resulted from a Lisle man’s reckless behavior. Richard M. Stevenson, 45, is accused of causing the collision that resulted in the death of Magdalena Jablonska, a former U.S. Marine from Des Plaines.

The wrongful-death suit, filed on behalf of Jablonska’s estate and her fiancé, Alan Telmni, seeks damages of at least $50,000. Telmni survived the incident. The crash took place in a “no-wake” zone near the McHenry Dam, where boating speed should be reduced.

Authorities allege Stevenson operated his boat, a 31-foot tritoon with three 500-horsepower engines, at least 75 mph, significantly above the safe speed limit. Stevenson faces charges of aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide. His blood alcohol level was reportedly more than twice the legal limit. He remains in custody at McHenry County jail until his court appearance on August 21.

According to the lawsuit, “Stevenson’s boat flew over the smaller vessel, causing decapitation and death to Plaintiff, Magdalena Jablonska, and physical and mental harm to Plaintiff, Alan Telmni.”

The suit further asserts Stevenson’s legal impairment at the time of the crash, contributing to the tragedy. It highlights the emotional trauma experienced by Telmni, witnessing the fatal injury to his fiancé from only inches away.

An attorney press conference scheduled for Thursday will address details of the litigation. Jablonska is survived by her fiancé, parents, and four siblings. Family members recall her as “the sunshine wherever she went.” They have initiated a fundraising campaign to support dog shelters in her honor, raising over $30,000 as of Wednesday.
