Texas Senate Candidate Criticizes Deportation Case

The controversy surrounding the deportation of a young boy and his father has stirred political debate. Homeland Security Secretary responded to Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico’s criticism regarding the deportation of Victor Martinez Nieto and his 5-year-old son, Liam Tadeo. The two were deported after being detained by immigration authorities in Austin, Texas, as they headed to a soccer game.

Talarico’s Criticism

On Wednesday, Talarico criticized the deportation, focusing on Tadeo’s lost opportunity to start kindergarten. He blamed the federal government’s immigration policies, specifically targeting the previous administration’s stance.

ICE kidnapped Liam Tadeo on his way to a soccer game with his dad. Liam should be in kindergarten. Instead, our government has thrown him in a prison camp hundreds of miles from home.

Talarico noted Liam’s deportation in a post, emphasizing his disapproval of the actions taken.

Homeland Security’s Response

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin countered Talarico’s claims by explaining the circumstances of the deportation. According to Mullin, Martinez Nieto chose to be deported with his son, disputing the notion of forced separation.

Mullin stated, “ICE does NOT separate families. Parents are asked if they want to be removed with their children or ICE will place the children with a safe person the parent designates. In this case, both the father and son were deported together.”

Legal Context

Martinez Nieto had a complex legal history. He was initially arrested by immigration officers in November 2025 and deported in February. Despite this, he re-entered the United States unlawfully, as reported by the Austin American-Statesman.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Talarico continues to spotlight the deportation case within his campaign. His criticism centers on immigration enforcement practices, using the incident as a focal point for broader political discussions.
