The US Olympic hockey teams recently celebrated their significant achievements with a ceremony at the White House. Both the men’s and women’s teams secured gold medals at the recent games, marking a historic moment for USA Hockey.
Men’s Team Victory and Key Players
In an intense match against Canada, the men’s team claimed victory through an overtime goal by Jack Hughes. Connor Hellebuyck, the team’s goaltending star, delivered an exceptional performance with 41 saves. His efforts earned him the Most Valuable Player award for the game.
Women’s Team Triumph
The women’s team also triumphed against Canada, with Abbey Murphy and Joy Dunne playing crucial roles in their journey to the gold medal. Their contributions were recognized during the White House celebration.
Connor Hellebuyck Requests Trade from the Winnipeg Jets
Amidst the celebrations, Connor Hellebuyck of the men’s team confirmed that he has requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets. At 33, Hellebuyck has spent his entire NHL career with the Jets, earning the Vezina Trophy three times as the league’s top goaltender. However, following a less successful season, Hellebuyck decided that seeking a new opportunity elsewhere is the best decision for his career and family.
“I have tried to handle the situation quietly and respectfully while giving the organization time to explore its options,” he stated through his agent.
Winnipeg Jets’ executive vice president and general manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff, acknowledged Hellebuyck’s request, expressing respect for the player’s contributions to the team.
Hellebuyck’s Olympic Legacy
Hellebuyck’s key role in the US men’s gold medal win at the 2026 Olympics enhanced his legacy. His 41-save performance against Canada was pivotal in the US securing the gold medal, the first since the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team.
In recognition of his contributions to US sports, President Trump has announced Hellebuyck as a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom during this year’s State of the Union address.
