“They’re going after trans people in sports, and they’re using this as a wedge issue because we love sports. And, you know, we don’t want our little girls to be unsafe in sports. And it’s like, ‘Unsafe from who? But okay,’” Rapinoe commented.

She highlighted a bill in Washington that demands invasive sex tests for girls to determine their eligibility to play. Initiative IL26-638, as per the House Republican Caucus, seeks to prohibit individuals defined as “biologically male” from participating in certain female school sports, requiring verification by healthcare providers.

Rapinoe voiced her concerns about the negative impact of such measures, emphasizing that women in sports gain confidence and power. “They don’t like women in sports because it helps us with confidence and power,” she noted, citing the achievements of women who played elite sports and later excelled in executive roles.

In an article for Marie Claire, Rapinoe discussed how anti-trans legislation distracts from important issues. She points out that transgender people have been competing in sports for decades, asserting that these legislative actions harm women and girls the most.
