Spanish First Lady Charged with Corruption

Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, faces charges of embezzlement, corruption, misappropriation of funds, and influence peddling. The accusations arise from her alleged involvement in helping favored companies secure public contracts.

Ms. Gómez has been under scrutiny since 2024 following a complaint from an anti-corruption group. They accused her of backing a bid for a public contract linked to companies with which she has personal and professional connections. Despite her denial of these charges, a judge in Madrid has found sufficient evidence to proceed to trial.

Judge Juan Carlos Peinado mandated Ms. Gómez to surrender her passport and report to the court bi-weekly. A date for the trial remains unspecified. In his ruling, the judge expressed concern over such behaviors, stating they are reminiscent of authoritarian regimes, which Spain has long left behind.

Spanish law allows plaintiffs to directly file complaints with the court, prompting judicial investigations and decisions on proceeding to trial. Ms. Gómez’s case has seen support from various right-wing groups, including the far-right Vox party.

Prime Minister Sánchez has defended his wife, criticizing the investigation as a politically motivated effort to damage his reputation. Despite initial thoughts of resignation, he continues to challenge what he perceives as a politically driven smear campaign. This legal issue has added to the scrutiny he faces over corruption within his administration.
