Camp Breastie Expands to Meet Rising Demand Among Breast Cancer Survivors

The annual Camp Breastie retreat in Pennsylvania has attracted hundreds of breast cancer survivors, becoming so popular that organizers are planning to expand to the West Coast. This four-day event serves as a supportive space where survivors can connect and heal. On the final night, attendees gather for a dance party aptly named Breastival.

At Camp Breastie, a unique activity begins the morning. Participants gather by the lake for a venting session. This early-morning ritual involves writing personal concerns, such as ‘Anger’ or ‘Fear,’ on small stones, which they then cast into the water. Nancy Antoine, a cancer survivor from Florida, leads the group in scream therapy, urging them to release their burdens with a cathartic scream.

The retreat drew 500 women, including breast cancer survivors, those with advanced disease, and individuals at high risk who have taken preventative measures. The camp has grown increasingly popular, prompting plans to expand. This year, tickets sold out in under two hours, reflecting high demand as breast cancer cases rise among younger adults.

More than 350,000 women in the United States receive a breast cancer diagnosis each year. Many younger adults are now affected, making spaces like Camp Breastie crucial for support and community. Cabin groups are organized with whimsical names like Apple, fostering camaraderie among attendees.
