Shakira Pledges Support for Educational Rebuilding in Colombia After Earthquake

BOGOTÁ, Colombia — Colombian singer Shakira announced plans to contribute to rebuilding educational infrastructure in Colombia’s Chocó province following a destructive earthquake. The earthquake, which reached 7.4 magnitude, caused significant damage, leading to hundreds of deaths and widespread devastation across the region.

During a visit to Quibdó, the provincial capital, Shakira committed to reconstructing at least 10 schools and restoring a local technological university. She highlighted the need for ongoing educational access, emphasizing the importance of immediate action to prevent disruption in children’s education.

Joining Shakira was Howard Buffett, son of philanthropist Warren Buffett. The Howard G. Buffett Foundation and Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos will work together on these initiatives. Shakira also announced financial backing from the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, Live Nation, and the CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean. The combined pledges total $1.25 million directed toward educational recovery.

The severe earthquake, which struck on August 10, resulted in substantial losses in western Colombia. Authorities reported over 287 fatalities and extensive destruction of homes and educational facilities. Chocó, identified as among the poorest areas in Colombia, faced significant damage, with 265 educational sites affected.

Shakira’s foundation has operated in Chocó for 22 years, focusing on educational access for youth. The foundation has contributed to the region through two schools, from which many students have graduated. The province, with an insufficient communication network and limited road infrastructure, comprises mostly Indigenous tribes and Afro Colombian communities.

Shakira expressed her dedication to supporting Chocó’s recovery, acknowledging the region’s historical neglect. She articulated her resolve to ensure that local communities can return to normalcy and children can continue their education.

Shakira, a Grammy-winning artist, has consistently advocated for education and recently participated in various performances supporting charitable causes. Her latest commitment is part of a broader effort by Latin American artists, including performances and fundraising events dedicated to earthquake relief efforts in Colombia and Venezuela.
