The Republican National Committee (RNC) has raised concerns about the influence of socialists on the Democratic Party. In a statement to Fox News Digital, Natalie Baldassarre, the RNC’s national spokesperson, criticized the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for pushing the Democrats toward political challenges. She referenced Megan Romer, co-chair of the DSA, who couldn’t specify tax rates on millionaires during an interview on ‘The New Yorker Radio Hour.’

Baldassarre expressed that socialists are leading the Democratic Party towards potential disaster. She urged that unless Democrats alter their course, candidates might have to reconcile with socialist beliefs that could risk national safety and financial stability.

During the interview, Romer advocated for significant taxes on wealthy Americans, particularly billionaires, whom she accuses of amassing wealth by exploiting labor. However, she did not offer a specific tax rate or threshold when questioned on the plan to heavily tax millionaires.

“Are we exploiting people is the bigger question,” Romer noted, emphasizing the need to evaluate economic fairness over setting arbitrary wealth limits.

The DSA’s strategy on wealth tax was vague, with plans to determine tax policies based on future spending needs and required revenue. Their official 2026 agenda proposes aggressive taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations to fund public services and infrastructure without specifying rates.

Recent electoral successes for DSA-backed candidates, like Melat Kiros in Colorado and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, underscore the rising influence of progressive policies. However, Romer differentiated El-Sayed by noting his capitalist stance, distancing him from the DSA.

In response to the growing influence of socialism, the centrist Democratic group Third Way announced a $15 million initiative aimed at reducing the impact of the DSA on the Democratic Party. Matt Bennett, the co-founder, described the DSA’s politics as dangerous and toxic, stressing the need for Democrats to focus on countering opposition from MAGA Republicans.

Romer dismissed the campaign by Third Way, suggesting their effort would not deter the DSA’s vision for a better future. She emphasized the power of grassroots movements in shaping this vision.
