Republican Senator Roger Marshall Faces Tough Kansas Senate Race

Republican Senator Roger Marshall is experiencing a tight contest in the Kansas Senate race. Recent polling suggests he maintains a narrow lead over Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton, a pastor known for leading a large megachurch. The Kansas State Fair debate saw Marshall face a challenging audience, meeting boos and chants of “shame on you” when defending past legal actions against patients with unpaid medical bills. This issue emerged from a New York Times report detailing over 700 lawsuits he filed during his extensive career as an obstetrician-gynecologist.

This Senate race, a key event in the 2026 midterms, is crucial as Republicans seek to protect their slight Senate majority, typically challenged during midterms. On the other hand, Democrats aim to gain majority control, requiring a switch of four Republican seats. With recent polls indicating competitiveness in traditionally conservative areas amid declining approval ratings of President Donald Trump, the Democratic party sees potential for gains.

Kansas hasn’t elected a Democratic Senator since 1932 and hasn’t come close in fifty years. Yet, current polls suggest a tight race this year, even though Trump won the state by 16 points in the 2024 election. Vice President JD Vance plans to boost Marshall’s campaign with a visit to Olathe, Kansas, underscoring the race’s importance. Attempts to obtain comments from both campaigns after hours have yet to receive a response.

Marshall vs. Hamilton: Polls and Predictions

Marshall remains the favored choice, though some surveys suggest a close race. A co/efficient poll conducted between September 8 and 10 shows a slight lead for Marshall, 49% to 44%, with 5% undecided and a margin of error of 3.22%. Another poll by the Global Strategy Group between August 12 and 16 had Hamilton narrowly ahead, 44% to 43%, within a margin of error of 3.5%. Public Policy Polling in August put Marshall at a slim 46% to 45% lead, but the margin of error remains unspecified.

The Kansas Senate race has grown more competitive since Hamilton secured the Democratic nomination, prompting The Cook Political Report to adjust its rating from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican.” Prediction markets strongly favor Marshall, with Kalshi assigning him a 79% likelihood of winning, while Polymarket offers him an 80% chance.

Marshall’s Legal Record and Approval Rating

Roger Marshall has faced scrutiny for filing over 700 lawsuits against patients with unpaid bills, which ranged from $101 to several thousand dollars. The New York Times details that Marshall’s legal actions often took place in Barton County, an area with higher poverty and uninsured rates. These lawsuits led to 81 arrests due to missed court dates. Marshall’s campaign asserts he provided care irrespective of payment ability, and that collection practices mirrored standard business procedures in Kansas.

Recent polling indicates Marshall’s favorability is underwater, with 42% of respondents holding a favorable view compared to 44% who do not. Despite this, he leads Hamilton by five points, suggesting negative views may not translate to losing support. Hamilton holds a net positive favorability with 34% viewing him positively against 27% negatively, though 39% remain undecided about him, highlighting his relative obscurity compared to Marshall.

Who Is Adam Hamilton?

Adam Hamilton is a first-time political candidate, best known for founding Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, which has grown to be the largest United Methodist congregation in the U.S. with 25,000 members across multiple locations. An author of over 30 books on Christian theology, Hamilton won the Democratic nomination by positioning himself as a moderate capable of appealing in conservative Kansas. Garnering $3.6 million early in his campaign, he offers Democrats hope for a more competitive race.

Marshall criticized Hamilton as “too woke for Kansas,” while Hamilton presents himself as a centrist, aiming to “bring people together”. His congregation reflects a mix of political affiliations, supporting his moderate stance. During the recent debate, Hamilton criticized Marshall on tariffs, healthcare, and foreign policies endorsed by Trump.
