Recently, a remarkable fishing story unfolded off the coast of New England. A record-breaking bluefin tuna was caught, weighing an astounding 1,116 pounds. This catch surpassed the previous New Hampshire state record by over 150 pounds, set in 2013.
Unexpected Challenge at Sea
Fisherman Brandon McGirl was aboard the “Out of Line,” captained by Jamie Savage of Savage Charters NH. They were not anticipating such a challenging day at sea. “It was very difficult conditions to try and fish. It was a little bit rougher than we were hoping for,” McGirl remarked.
As they prepared to end their day, the familiar sound of the reels catching a fish filled the air. As the men realized they had something significant on their line, a chase ensued for over a mile. However, pulling this giant into their boat presented the greatest difficulty.
A Milestone in Fishing
Captain Savage expressed astonishment when they finally lifted the fish from the water. “We lifted it out of the water and immediately knew it was way bigger than what we thought and bigger than anything either of us had seen before,” he said. The final weight of 1,116 pounds became a dream come true for McGirl, who shared, “If you tuna fish for a long time, to catch a 1,000-pound fish is something that you dream of.”
Images captured from the day showed the massive scale of the bluefin, nearly too large for the boat, and dwarfing both men.
The caught tuna will now make its way to the market, where many customers will experience the delight of this seafood delicacy.
This extraordinary event highlights the unpredictable nature and challenges of deep-sea fishing, as well as the potential for record-breaking achievements.
