Walking along a path in Austin, Texas, Jasper Steinmetz noticed something familiar. He saw a man with an Indiana University athletic backpack. Having recently graduated from Indiana, Steinmetz felt a connection and decided to speak to him.
The man he encountered was Sampson James, originally from Indiana. James had been homeless for eight months. Steinmetz later discovered that James was once a four-star football recruit from Avon High School in Indiana. James began his college football career as a running back for Indiana University in 2019. He transferred to Purdue in 2021 and returned to Indiana University in 2023 as a walk-on.
James was an exceptional athlete. Unfortunately, his football career ended due to a knee injury and a bipolar disorder diagnosis. He left Indiana University in 2023 without a degree and eventually lost everything, except for his backpack.
“He was an amazing athlete, really a standout star,” Steinmetz reflected.
Despite his challenges, meeting Steinmetz offered a new beginning. Steinmetz started an online fundraiser for James, raising $17,000.
With these funds, Steinmetz prepaid rent and furnished an apartment for James. This support marked a fresh start for the former athlete.
When Steinmetz and James walk along their meeting path now, the future appears brighter.
“Now that all these people donated and you got the apartment, they really want to see you succeed,” Steinmetz told James.
“Oh yeah, and I’m big on not letting them down,” James responded.
The story highlights how shared experiences can lead to remarkable transformations.
